Dry skin is extremely common and can result from weather, aging, frequent hot showers, harsh soaps, or dehydration.
But persistent dry, rough, or tight-feeling skin can also occur in people with chronic kidney disease.
Healthy kidneys help maintain the proper balance of minerals in the blood. When kidney function becomes significantly impaired, disturbances involving minerals such as phosphorus can contribute to skin dryness and discomfort.
Kidney-related dry skin may feel:
* Rough
* Flaky
* Tight
* Unusually uncomfortable
* Resistant to ordinary moisturizers
Dry skin by itself does **not** mean your kidneys are failing. But if it persists alongside other unexplained symptoms, it may be worth getting checked.
