Persistent itching is one of the better-recognized skin symptoms associated with chronic kidney disease.
This condition is called **chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus**, or CKD-aP.
It is most common in people with advanced kidney disease or kidney failure, although it can occur earlier. Researchers believe several mechanisms may contribute, including inflammation, nerve signaling changes, dry skin, and disturbances involving waste products and minerals.
The itching may:
* Affect large areas of the body
* Be worse at night
* Occur without an obvious rash
* Affect the back, arms, legs, or face
* Interfere with sleep
* Become worse after scratching
Because many conditions can cause itching—including allergies, eczema, liver disease, medications, and dry skin—it should not automatically be blamed on the kidneys.
