Puffy eyes can happen after crying, poor sleep, allergies, high salt intake, or other common causes.
But persistent swelling around the eyes—particularly in the morning—can sometimes occur in kidney disease.
The kidneys normally help regulate fluid and remove waste. When kidney function is impaired, fluid may accumulate in tissues. Protein leaking into the urine can also be associated with swelling.
Kidney-related swelling may appear around the:
* Eyes
* Face
* Ankles
* Feet
* Lower legs
Repeated puffiness together with foamy urine, ankle swelling, or high blood pressure deserves medical evaluation.
